Lower Manhattan remains a few steps ahead of current culture, with residents and happenings defying norms and defining cool. Over the last 30 years, street art was born and has flourished here, lending itself to Lower East Side’s inimitable sense of creativity and vitality. One of the oldest neighborhoods in Manhattan, history has cultivated a sense of youth, rebellion, and freedom for decades, manifesting in the creative exploration of graffiti art.

As you take in every angle of the Manhattan skyline in the 14th-floor lobby of Hotel Indigo® Lower East Sidebe sure to look up and marvel at a custom 40 x 16’ ceiling mural by NYC graffiti legend Lee Quiñones. One of the subjects of the mural is legend David Wilkie, who resided in LES until his passing in 2015. Also known as Adam Purple, he created the well-known community garden later named Purple’s Garden of Eden. Pay your own respects with a cocktail at Mr. Purple, our notorious rooftop bar, and be sure to take note of the colorful graphics with street art motifs in the corridors and art extracted from the original Quiñones mural in our guest rooms.

Considered the most influential artist to emerge from the NYC subway art movement, the work of Puerto Rican-born Lee Quiñones is celebrated in both the contemporary art world and popular culture circles. Intricately comprised and often inclined with socio-political provocation, Quiñones’ paintings are permanent fixtures in galleries around the world, including the Whitney Museum of Art, the Museum of the City New York, the Perez Art Museum Miami, the Groniger Museum (Netherlands). He’s also collaborated with streetwear brand staples like Supreme, adidas, and Agnes B.

It’s a vibe: timeless, bold, bright – just like Lower East Side.
